CHIME CHCIO Program Celebrates Milestone

May 26, 2011

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Certified Healthcare CIO (CHCIO) Program is celebrating one-big milestone — surpassing 100 credentialed individuals since the program launched in July 2009.

Following its last examination in April, 109 CHIME members and CHIME affiliate program participants have earned the CHCIO and CHCIO-Eligible designation.

“CHIME is proud to recognize the over 100 certified professionals who have identified themselves as leaders in the healthcare IT industry,” said CHIME Board member and Certification Committee Chair Gary Barnes, CIO at Medical Center Health System in Texas. “Their commitment during these extremely busy times shows their dedication for advocating for more effective use of information management and turning ‘Meaningful Use’ to ‘Meaningful Care’.”

CHCIO shows these individuals have achieved the highest standard of professional development for healthcare CIOs and is the only credentialing program that distinguishes healthcare IT executives from other industries.

“I am both pleased and proud to have achieved the CHCIO distinction knowing the character and skills of those that have been certified before me,” said Rod Dykehouse, vice president of information services and CIO at ProHealth Care in Wisconsin, one of 16 who passed April’s exam. “It is their industry prominence, combined with the difficulty of the exam and certification requirements, that has built the respect for the CHCIO achievement.”

CHIME members who have been in a CIO or equivalent position for at least three years, pass the 125-question CHCIO examination, and collect 25 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are eligible to become certified. CHCIOs must be committed to ongoing professional development and undergo recertification every three years.

Additionally, CHIME is dedicated to the development of future industry leaders and as such awards the designation: CHCIO-Eligible. This status is awarded to those candidates who meet all of the program requirements but lack the requisite number of years of experience as a CIO.

The next CHCIO Examination is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, in San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with the CHIME11 Fall CIO Forum. For more information about the CHCIO Program, including exam registration, visit: http://cio-chime.org/chcio/index.asp.
