Dr. David Blumenthal to Step Down as National Coordinator of ONC

February 4, 2011

David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, the National Coordinator of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology appointed by President Obama in March 2009 is reportedly stepping down from his post this spring. The announcement, which surprised many in the health IT community, comes as the nation is just getting underway with work on Meaningful Use of an Electronic Health Record. Meaningful Use is a key aspect to adoption of EHRs by healthcare providers. There has been no official announcement from Health and Human Services officials as of Friday morning, though reports said that Dr. Blumenthal made the announcement to the ONC staff on Thursday afternoon.
